Shopsmith Lathe duplicator 

MODIFICATIONS

When I used my Lathe Duplicator for the first time I followed the instruction manual for the setup. I turned a number of same length legs to test out the functionality and to get used to the unit in operation. All was straightforward until I decided to turn some smaller legs. It was then I saw I had to make some alterations to the setup as I was unable to slide the headstock closer to the tailstock. After a few more operations I thought to myself  "Why do I have to keep doing this??" A Better design would be to have the arms of the duplicator as far apart as possible and then you could use the duplicator for any variety of stock lengths.

Have a look at the pictures but in essence all I have done is extend the Duplicator Part 13 Channel with the addition of a steel bar. I bolted it to the Channel and at the connection end made a balancing connection to ensure the Channel stays parallel to the way tubes. I used the original slider in the channel to connect the bar and made a similar one for the other end. I had the correct tap to keep the threads the same but in reality the support end can be any thread you have as once assembled it won't need to come apart again.

If this part is difficult and you can't tap any threads you could use plain holes with nuts and bolts, not as neat but will do the job.

I hope this design inspires you to make the same modifications.
